TV REVIEW: Jack Ryan (Season 3)

By: Kimberly Grant

Our favorite US Marine turned CIA officer is back for another season of espionage and government secrets with a Russian twist.

Season 3 of Amazon Prime’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is now available for streaming.

1st World Globe Trotting

In this season of Jack Ryan, our titular hero (played by John Krasinki) is on the hunt for intelligence of the Russian variety.  Something big is about to happen in the former Soviet Union and Jack has to stop it.  This season’s adventure takes Jack and his small team throughout Western Europe.  The locations include the Czech Republic, Italy, Austria, Budapest, Russia, and even Greece.

Written by Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland (based on the novel series by Tom Clancy), the season starts with Jack infiltrating a ship to find one of Russia’s most dangerous weapons.   This leads Ryan to being on the run from the US government and labeled as a traitor.  The season culminates on another ship, in which Jack must stop the next World War.

Different Season, Same Themes

If you’re a fan of the Jack Ryan series, then you already know what to expect.  There will be power plays, intrigue, breaking and entering, and Jack Ryan kicking butt.  You will also get multiple doses of Jack putting his own life in danger for the good of the American people.  Krasinki, who was clearly born to play Jack Ryan, gives the character heroism and makes him more relatable to the audience.

You will also get three women in positions of power this season.  Lucy Newman-Williams plays American Ambassador Marie Cahill.  Nina Hoss plays Czech Republic President Alena Kovac.  And, Betty Gabriel plays Moscow Station Chief Elizabeth Wright.  If Gabriel sounds familiar, she had an iconic role in Jordan Peele’s Get Out as a maid named Georgina.

These women are integral to Jack and company’s race to save the United States from a terrible outcome.  It’s nice to see women in positions of power on the small screen.  They’re not damsels in distress and they’re not trying to be overly masculine.  They just add value to the story.  It’s refreshing.

All About Saving the Day

Speaking of women adding value (spoiler alert), there is no love interest for Jack in this season.  I kinda like it that way.  Without the love interest, the writers can focus more on the storyline.  A good storyline; at that.  It also allowed the writers to flesh out the other major characters in the series.

James Greer (Wendell Pierce) shows just how good he is at his job; despite the heart condition.  Filling out his suits quite nicely, Pierce reminds the audience just how valuable his character is to the series.  His cool, calm demeanor keeps the audience engaged and allows him to get into hard-to-reach places.

Michael Kelly reprises his role as Mike November.  Mike has carved out a second life for himself after the debacle in Venezuela.  He’s actually a lot better at his new job.  Together, Greer and November help Jack save the day; once again.  I rather like the idea of focusing on the matter at hand and not necessarily giving Jack eye candy to take away his attention.

If you are a fan of Jack Ryan, then this season will not disappoint.  If you aren’t a fan of the Jack Ryan series, then you can still enjoy the series.  It starts with a bang and ends with nail-biting suspense.
