How to Generate A Statement of Work Model to Enhance Your Master Service Agreement
By: Kimberly Grant
Pause. Before you start that project, you should make sure you’ve consulted with your Master Services Agreement (MSA). In marketing, before beginning a big project, a marketing team produces what is called a statement of work (SOW); which can be a MSA.
Just in case you thought the SOW Pause was a new Tik Tok dance, it’s not. It’s taking a moment to prepare a SOW, which is a legally binding document. The SOW basically tells your client what you plan to do, how long it will take, and how much it will cost. There is a lot of thought that goes into a SOW and a lot of pages. In extreme cases, a statement of work can be up to 100 pages.
When developing a SOW, it is best to have a checklist to help guide the document. The checklist (or outline) should include the following:

Once you finalize your SOW, you’re ready to submit it to your client. This document is reviewed and revised multiple times until all parties come to an agreement. That’s why a statement of work is also referred to as a MSA. Now that you’ve taken the MSA pause and your legally binding document is finalized, it’s go time.
Because the marketing field is vast and the types of marketing jobs are varied, setting a SOW is just the first hurdle. Coordinating a team (and even sub teams) requires a marketing manager to have a high amount of skill, organization, adherence to the set schedule, and a hint of hand holding to get the job done. Luckily, the marketing manager will have a handy checklist via the SOW to stay on track. Otherwise, their team will hit a snag and forever be on pause.
